Friday 9th May

Some of this week’s learning:

In English this week, the children have been writing dictated sentences. We have continued to explore Mr Gumpy’s Outing and the children have worked really hard to remember a sentence, think about their phonics and write their sentence. The adults are so impressed.

In maths this week we have been exploring numbers within 20 but have also been exploring taking away within 20. The children have been using mathematical sentences and are amazing!

During outdoor learning this week, we went on a hunt for lots of sticks in our field, we then used twine and worked as a team to make garden stick men! The children were amazing at helping each other to wrap the twine around the sticks. They then made them even better by using leaves to decorate their stick men.

The children have also been using water colours to paint butterflies, making bean plant life cycles , decorating flowers and so much more!

On Thursday we explored what VE day was and what it means to so many people. We went outside at 12:00 to hold a 2-minute silence to remember and then Mr Whittaker played The Last Post on his trumpet. Today all of our resources were based on VE day ready for our VE Day picnic!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

This week we have been enjoying our book ‘Kitchen Disco, a funny rhyming book where the fruit comes to life and parties in the kitchen after dark!

We had our own kitchen disco dancefloor and have enjoyed lots of disco music and dancing.

The children have been identifying healthy and unhealthy foods and with a couple of new songs we have been singing, do not be surprised if you hear the lyrics ‘vegetables and fruits, are really very yummy, so put them in your tummy’ being sung by the children.

The children sorted pictures of foods into the correct groups, and we talked about how we eat lots of the healthy foods, and a little of the unhealthy.

We had a pineapple to look at and create through paint, the children used sponges and their fingers to paint with, then painted their hands green to make the pineapple top.

Outside we are all excited to have our sandpit filled with sand again, it has been very popular!

Next week we will start to plant some seeds of some fruits and vegetables for the children to look after and watch them grow in our garden area.

We hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

At nursery this week we have started to explore insects and are looking at our enquiry question "Are insects important?"
The children have been looking at lifecycles and what happens to caterpillars and they made some beautiful butterflies with the paint. They have been using language heard in the story of the "Hungry Caterpillar" such as cocoon.
They have made fingerprint ladybirds in the art area.

As well as "The Hungry Caterpillar",  the children have explored and have been learning different facts about insects in a range of books.

In phonics, we have been talking about the garden centre. The children have been naming and sorting different gardening items in a game of "What's in the basket?" and have assigned different instrumental sounds to different flowers.

In the maths area we have been sorting and comparing a range of objects and the children have been counitng how many in different sets.

On Thursday we celebrated the anniversary of VE Day. We enjoyed a morning snack with different foods including strawberries and cucumber sandwiches! and the children made a commemorative plate to take home.

We look forward to more fun next week.
Have a great weekend

Julie and Sarah

The weather really has taken a turn for the better this week with the children able to take advantage of our amazing grounds. It's been another great week with lot of things going on to tell you about. Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Lego team who travelled to Harrogate last weekend to compete in the national finals. We were so proud of them to reach the final and were over the moon with the fact that they came 8th in the whole country in the coding section of the competition. We could not have done it without the support of the school community and it really shows what a special place Darite can be. To find out more details of this superb achievement, please look at the previous blog post Thursday saw VE day with the whole school celebrating the end of the Second World War in Europe. We learned all about the day, why it was special and why it still matters today. We also learned from a pupil that Jersey (one of the only places to be occupied by the Axis powers in WW2) has a "Liberation Day" holiday on the 9th as the news of the end of the fighting didn't reach the island until a day later. We also sampled some delicious flag biscuits to celebrate. We also welcomed Tom from the UK Parliament Engagement Program to KS2 this week. He came in to talk about the way parliament works, how laws are passed and why the building is so important. Thank you to Tom for giving up his time.

Reflection and Celebration

What a fantastic week it has been for Tregantle Class! We’ve seen amazing progress in phonics—our pupils have been working incredibly hard, showing growing confidence in segmenting, blending, and recognising tricky words. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm during our phonics sessions, and the children are clearly proud of how far they’ve come. In maths, we’ve been confidently counting and deepening our understanding of numbers up to 20. Whether it’s recognising number patterns, solving simple problems, or using number lines, the class has shown brilliant thinking and teamwork throughout. Friday brought an exciting visit to Saltash Library, where the children had the opportunity to explore a wide range of books and even change their book to take home. It was a lovely trip that encouraged a real love of reading—plus, it’s always great to see the children’s excitement when discovering new stories. We had a wonderful VE Day celebration on Thursday. The children took part in a thoughtful assembly where we reflected on the importance of peace and remembrance. Everyone observed a respectful 2-minute silence, showing real maturity and understanding. Afterwards, the whole school gathered on the field for a joyful picnic, filled with laughter, music, and sunshine—such a special way to come together as a community. Well done, Tregantle Class, for a week full of hard work, reflection, and fun!

A Busy and Brilliant Week!

What a packed week we've had in Talland Class! From editing written work and spiritual thinking to maths mastery and making memories on the school field, we’ve truly shown what amazing learners we are.

Using Inverted Commas in Speech

We had great fun correcting written speech and have developed a sound grasp of using inverted commas for direct speech correctly. Well done, Talland authors!

Area and Perimeter of Compound Shapes

In Maths, we’ve become shape-solving experts! We tackled compound shapes by breaking them down into simpler rectangles. We used rulers, formulas and our sharp minds to find both the area and perimeter. It was a challenge at first, but now we’re pros at it!

VE Day Picnic - Red, White and Blue

Thursday was especially exciting as we celebrated VE Day with a picnic on the school field. Everyone looked fantastic in red, white and blue, and the sunshine made it even better. We ate our lunch and juice while remembering the bravery and joy of the end of WWII.

Hinduism, Karma and Life After Death

In RE, we’ve been learning about Hindu beliefs, especially karma, reincarnation, and life after death. We talked about how actions have consequences, and that Hindus believe in doing good deeds to have a better next life. We discussed how this helps guide people to make kind, thoughtful choices.

Deserts and their Features

Geography took us to some of the hottest places on Earth — the deserts! We looked at physical features like sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and mushroom rocks. We learned how these features form and how animals and people adapt to survive in extreme heat with little water. “Deserts are dry because they get very little rain!” explained one child during our class discussion.

best wishes, Mrs Swabey, Mr Parry and Mrs Walters.

Class 3 Blog for W/E 9th May 2025

It’s been a busy and exciting time in Class 3, and we’re so proud of how well the children are engaging with their learning across all subjects.

Our weekly 45-minute flute lessons have now begun, and the children have taken to them with real enthusiasm. For many, it’s their first time learning a musical instrument, and they worked incredibly hard last week to produce some impressive early sounds. We’re really looking forward to seeing their skills develop over the term.

In history, we’ve been learning about the Anglo Saxons—why they came to Britain after the Romans and what made them stay. This week, we explored Anglo Saxon village life and made our own Wattle and Daub models. The children created the foundations, added ‘wattle’ using lollipop sticks, weaved pipe cleaners, and applied a homemade mix of clay, water, and straw as the daub. We left out the traditional manure, much to everyone’s relief! The results were fantastic—do check out the photos attached.

Our gymnastic sessions are still running smoothly at Copper Valley Primary. The children have been practising jumps, rolls, and balances, and are now beginning to link them together into sequences.

In maths, we’ve just finished our work on fractions, with all pupils making brilliant progress. Next, we’re moving on to telling the time—practising this at home, like with times tables, will really support the children’s confidence and speed.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   A lovely week in the May sunshine

Posted 09/05/2025
by Darren Woolner

It's been a lovely week in the May sunshine this week. Our children have been so busy enjoying all of the wonderful learning opportunities this week. We also celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Take a look in this week's Bulletin to find out more about this week's events.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   Summer Term Week 3

by Joanne Pentreath

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Marazion Class! The highlight was undoubtedly our celebration of VE Day. The children took part in a meaningful and insightful assembly, reflecting on the importance of peace and remembrance. This was followed by a joyful picnic lunch on the school field, where everyone enjoyed time together in the sunshine, marking the day in a special and memorable way.

In English, our focus has been on enhancing descriptive writing. The children have been exploring the use of figurative language and expanded noun phrases to bring imaginary settings to life. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity flourish as they crafted vivid and imaginative descriptions, using language to transport their readers to far-off, magical places.

Our Maths learning has taken different directions for each year group. Year 3 have successfully wrapped up their work on length and perimeter and are now diving into fractions with great enthusiasm. Year 4, meanwhile, have started an exciting new topic on angles and triangles.

In History, we’ve been exploring the fascinating period of change and continuity between the Iron Age and the Anglo-Saxons. The children have been comparing aspects of daily life, culture, and settlement, developing a deeper understanding of how societies evolve over time.

PSHE this week focused on resolving conflicts and how to act respectfully during disagreements with friends. These sessions provided valuable strategies for handling arguments and promoting positive relationships.

In RE, we continued our learning about the Muslim faith, with a particular focus on Ramadan. The children have been thoughtful and inquisitive, asking meaningful questions and developing respect for different beliefs and practices.

Science lessons carried on with our topic of magnetism. The children have enjoyed investigating how magnets work and conducting hands-on experiments to explore magnetic forces. In Computing, we continued learning about emails—how they work, how to use them safely, and their importance in modern communication.

Our PE sessions with the Argyle Community Trust coach have been filled with energy and laughter. The focus has been on athletics, with children developing key skills through fun and engaging games. It’s been great to see their confidence and teamwork grow.

Finally, in Design and Technology, we’ve been using 3D nets to support our ongoing castle design project. The children have been applying their mathematical understanding in a practical way, using their nets to create models and develop their ideas.

It’s been a rich and rewarding week of learning across the curriculum. Thank you for your continued support—have a lovely weekend!

VE Day

Another busy week in year 6!

We have been revising for our SATs tests next week - everything from nouns in English to algebra in Maths. We are now ready to try our best and conquer the tests as a team.

In RE, we have been looking at karma and reincarnation in Hinduism. We played a special game of snakes and ladders which depended on good and bad karma. If you ended up going down the snake, you could be reincarnated as a fly! We also looked into how these beliefs impacts on a Hindu person's daily life and choices.

On Thursday, we celebrated 80 years since VE day. We started the day with an assembly, then had a lovely picnic at lunchtime in the sunshine. We all enjoyed dressing in red, white and blue for the day.

w/e 2/5/25

We’ve had another exciting and enriching week in Year 3 and 4! Here's a round-up of what your children have been exploring and learning across the curriculum:

English – Exploring Imaginary Worlds and Figurative Language.

This week, we’ve delved into texts set in imaginative and fantastical worlds. The children have enjoyed describing settings and characters using powerful figurative language, including similes and personification. Their creativity has truly shone as they painted vivid pictures with their words!

Maths – Perimeter and Fractions.

In Maths, our Year 3s have begun learning about perimeter—they’ve measured the edges of shapes and are starting to calculate total lengths confidently. Meanwhile, Year 4 pupils have continued their work on fractions, deepening their understanding of equivalent fractions and learning how to place them on number lines.

Science – Marvellous Magnets.

The children have been investigating magnets, discovering which materials are magnetic and learning about poles and magnetic forces. They were fascinated to find out how magnets can attract or repel without touching!

History – The Anglo-Saxon Invasion

In History, we’ve been asking: Why did the Anglo-Saxons invade Britain? The class explored reasons such as land, resources, and settlement opportunities. We’ve looked at maps and artefacts to understand how they travelled and where they settled. #

PSHE – Setting Boundaries in Relationships

Our PSHE focus this week was on setting boundaries and understanding respectful relationships. The children discussed different types of relationships and practised how to express their feelings and needs in a healthy, confident way.

Computing – Sending Emails

A big moment this week in Computing, as the children learned how to compose and send their own emails! They were introduced to email safety and etiquette and practised sending polite, purposeful messages.

PE – Agility, Balance and Coordination with Argyle Trust

We were thrilled to welcome a coach from the Argyle Trust for our first PE session together. The children played fast-paced games focused on improving agility, balance, and coordination—and they absolutely loved it!

RE – The Second Pillar of Islam

In RE, we explored the second pillar of Islam – Salah, the practice of prayer. Children discussed the importance of prayer in Muslim life and how it shows discipline, focus, and connection to faith.

Design & Technology – Designing Strong and Sturdy Castles

This week in DT, we looked at the key features of castles—moats, towers, battlements—and discussed what makes a castle strong and secure. The children then used this knowledge to begin designing their own impressive fortresses!

Reading Assembly – A Cat Called Waverly

In our KS2 reading assembly, we enjoyed the story of A Cat Called Waverly, which beautifully echoed our projected characteristics such as resilience, curiosity, and compassion. It sparked some wonderful discussions afterwards.

Thank you for your continued support. We’re so proud of the enthusiasm and effort the children bring to their learning each day.

This week's overview-

In Maths, we've been exploring mass and volume—learning how to measure and compare mass using grams and kilograms, and volume using millilitres and litres. We've been weighing objects to understand these concepts.

In English, we've been working on The Magic Bed, we've been focusing on descriptive sentences that bring writing to life with vivid details.

In RE- we've looked at the idea of "belonging". We've also looked at Christian symbols, such as the cross, dove, or fish, which are often used to express deeper meanings in stories and religious texts.

In History, we've been learning about Florence Nightingale and the important changes she made to hospitals. Before her influence, hospitals were often dirty and overcrowded. She helped improve them by focusing on cleanliness, better organisation, and proper care for the sick.

In DT we've been weaving!

Harrowbarrow Primary Academy   Marvellous May

Posted 08/05/2025
by Andrew Hunt

May is the month that always starts with a celebration through the annual Harrowbarrow & Metherell May Day festivities. Once again, our dancers contributed their efforts to this event through the long standing tradition of dancing around the Maypole. This year, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, they started with a Lindy Hop style dance. Well done to all those who took part and thank you to Melissa Pinfield for coaching them. We also held a short commemoration of VE Day on the school field yesterday and held a minute silence.
Whilst December may feel like a long way off, preparations for the Cotehele flower garland have to start now. Each year we are invited to make the garland that hangs in the restaurant over Christmas. This also involves growing and drying some of the flowers. As our self-appointed head gardener, Sam Beagley in Year 6 has taken responsibility for tending, picking and drying the flowers. So far, he is doing an amazing job.

This week, as part of the history, Class 3 were making model wattle and daub walls to understand how Tudor houses were constructed. The children were relieved to know they were using clay instead of the traditional animal manure!

Making the most of the glorious sunshine today, our infant classes had a badminton taster session with a visiting sports coach. The children always enjoy trying something new and, who knows, maybe one of them will be a future badminton champion.

Health & Safety
Following a parental concern, please ensure dogs are on a lead and kept a safe distance from young children during drop-off and collection times.  Dogs are also excluded from the school site. Thank you for your cooperation.

I look forward to sharing more of the children's wonderful learning outcomes and the opportunities they have had next week.

Harrowbarrow Primary Academy   Studying Sculpture

Posted 07/05/2025
by Thomas Ottewell-Taylor

As you may know, we have been focussing our Art lessons on sculpture this half term.

We have been looking at the work of a few sculptors with permanent or temporary work displayed in Plymouth. We have looked at LOOK II, by Antony Gormley, who also sculpted The Angel of the North. This can be seen on West Hoe Pier.

We have had an even closer look at the work of Jyll Bradley, particularly The Hop.
An exhibition of her work can currently be seen at The Box.

We had a go doing warm-up sketches of The Hop, responded to cut out photos of it, then used acetate to collage our own versions. We also imitated Jyll Bradley’s work using our light box and brightly coloured transparent objects.

If anyone is interested in seeing some fabulous local sculptures, please see the link below where The Box have provided a list of permanent exhibits which can be seen around Plymouth.
