This week, Talland class have been incredibly busy with not one, but two, extra PE sessions this week. We are immensely lucky to have 'Cricket Chris' instructing us as part of the 'Time to Shine' program. After an assembly introducing the basic physical and life skills we would be covering, we began with catching and bowling this week. The progress the children have made, even in a couple of hours, has been vast - who knows, we may have a future England player in our midst!
In art, we are studying the work of William Morris (linking with our big question, 'Were the Victorians Really Vile?'). This week the children were tasked with making careful observations of some of Morris's most famous designs and simplifying them. They then took their inspiration from nature closer to home - around the school grounds! We went on an observation walk; picking up interesting leaves and fallen flowers, as well as taking photos of trees, flowers and leaves that we thought we particularly pleasing to the eye. Back in the classroom, we created simplistic outline sketches of some of these items and images, preparing to transform them into a printing block design in the next couple of weeks. We were very taken with the hydrangea shown above - we liked the outline shape of each set of petals. Check back next week to see a sneak preview of some of our designs so far...

Over the last couple of weeks the children have been enjoying the new classroom set up and some of the new resources we have. All the children old and new have settled in well to school life. We went on a bear hunt in the forest and even found a bear! The children then created their own verses for the bear hunt story. Out in the forest the children have been making animal homes as part of their construction unit in DT. The children also made some amazing pictures representing the main scenes from the story using collage. Please see the document below which tells you a little bit about what we will be doing in Little Foresters over the next few weeks.

We have now settled into the routines of school and the children are enjoying their new learning journeys. In Canute class, they are finding our about people who help us and they will be focusing their history lessons on finding out about Florence Nightingale, why she is a historically important person and the legacy she left behind. In Tregeagle class, their journey is looking at how children's lives have changed through history, starting in the Roman times and travelling through the Tudor and Victorian eras to investigate continuity and change in education, work and leisure. They have already discovered, much to their horror, that children as young as 7 went to work and we can see the beginnings of real appreciation for the work done to protect and develop children’s rights so their own lives are much improved.
We look forward to seeing Canute parents on Monday afternoon at 2:45pm for our Early Reading session with Mrs Fernie, where she will explain how we teach phonics, the essential building blocks for successful access to reading, spelling and writing.
Achievement Assembly
Writer of the week
Tegan for a fantastically ambitious start to the year accepting the challenge to reach greater depths within the standard.
Indi for applying her phonics learning to sound out so she can work independently in writing lessons.
Star of the week
Ava for always engaging with every single learning activity with positivity and determination to succeed.
Ronnie for being a super role model for learning and behaviour expectations in Canute.
Have a lovely weekend,

PE
The sunshine and weaker winds have been a welcome change this week making our lessons less challenging. In our 2 PE lessons, we are focusing on striking and fielding – rounders – and net/wall games – basketball. For rounders, we have started the journey with refreshers for striking the ball, pairing up to bowl and strike using their iPads to film each other to analyse their techniques and reflect on improvements and progress. On Friday, we had our first full game on the school field and it was great to see how the teams supported each other with tips and techniques and game plans modelling competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
HISTORY
We continue to investigate and interrogate historical sources to find out more about children’s lives. With a specific focus on continuity and change, the children are now looking at working lives of children in the Tudor era. They are making good use of reading skills to make inferences and deductions in their interrogating of primary and secondary sources leading to some fantastic observations and questions. On Friday we discussed what childhood might be like if Tudor era working conditions still existed in our modern world.
WHEAL MARTYN
Tuesday we are at Wheal Martyn to supplement our classroom learning. We leave school at 9am and will return for the end of the day. Children need a packed lunch (unless you have requested a school packed lunch, must wear school uniform and suitable shoes for walking, bring a coat, snack and enough water for the day.
Have a lovely weekend,

A week of fun, families, and forest school!
It has been a beautifully sunny week with us all enjoying as much time outdoors for our learning, exploring and playing.
This week our book ‘My Big Fantastic Family’ was a sensitive story about how a little girl copes with change after her parents separate. It explores the feelings of what it is like to be a part of a big, blended family.
We developed our social skills by exploring what our own families look like with some grand conversation time. We understood that some families have siblings, and some have none. Some of the children have been able to stand up with their own family pictures and talk about their family members to their friends. Thank you if you have already sent in a picture, the children have loved sharing them.
Also, this week we enjoyed our own garden area, painting outside, and had our first explore of Forest School. We walked around talking about the different areas to explore, spotted some apples ready to eat, and found some autumn treasures along the way.
Next week we will be exploring emotions and feelings, and how we can show kindness to our friends and families.
The weather is looking a little more unsettled for next week so please do remember raincoats for your child.
Newsletters were handed out in paper format but if you have not had one then there is a copy attached below.
We hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

During our Wider Curriculum lessons this week, we have continued to explore 'What makes our world go around?'. In Geography, we found out what the equator is and discovered what the climate is like for countries along the equator. We managed to get into the swimming pool on Friday, which was fantastic, but a tad cold! We had fun though, playing some pool games. During Science, we learnt about the human life cycle, along with the life cycle of barn owls. Can you recall the five stages of the barn owl life cycle?
In English, we have been working hard on our descriptive writing this week. We recapped adjectives and nouns, and written some amazing expanded noun phrases inspired by owls. Today, we began to plan for writing our own character descriptions about Plop from 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark' by Jill Tomlinson. I can't wait to see your final written descriptions next week!
In Maths, we have continued working hard on our Place Value unit. This week, we have particularly been using number lines to count in 10s and 1s (Y2) and 100s (Y3).
Congratulations to Lowen J, Harley and Darragh for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. And a big well done to Amelia and Frankie for achieving their 22 club!
Please find this half terms Knowledge Web attached below. This details everything your child will be learning during wider curriculum lessons. Of course, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Reminder - Meet the Teacher is on Wednesday 25th September at 2:45pm.
We hope you have a fabulous weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

School Council Our School Council is a group of dedicated and passionate pupils who are committed to making our
school a better place for everyone. School Council members are elected by their peers in our School
Council elections which we hold every September. Well done to everyone who put themselves
forward and to those who have been elected this year: Elsie, Martha, Henry, Grace, Tabbi, Benjamin,
Amelia, Ronnie and Ada and Phoebe (our member for Pupil Voice for PE and Sport). Information about
our School Council can be found on this website under the ‘Our Children’ tab.
Time Capsule
Each of our classes has created a booklet to go in a time capsule to be buried under Big Green in Polperro which
is currently being refurbished. The booklets contain the children’s self-portraits and their wishes for
the future. To go with the booklets, we have written a letter to the future (attached) which Tristan
read beautifully to the school at today’s assembly.
Asda Cash for Schools
Parentkind – a charity that supports school PTAs - have teamed up with Asda, who is making millions
of pounds available to donate to primary schools across the UK through their ‘Cashpot for Schools’
initiative. To support our school, all you have to do is opt-in through the Asda Rewards app, shop
and scan in store or shop online at Asda.com. Between 2nd September and 30th November 2024,
every time you shop with Asda using the Rewards app, our school will receive a percentage of your
spend.
Home School Agreement/ Parental Consents
Please would you take some time to log into your Arbor Parent Portal/App to check both your
own and your child’s data, amending where necessary ensuring you have details of at least two
contacts on your file in case of an emergency. Once logged in you will notice that the 2024/25
Home School Agreement has been uploaded. Consents are to be completed for every child to
enable them to have photos taken, watch PG films, attend local sporting events and access
approved learning platforms etc.
Pre-loved uniform
We keep a stock of very good condition pre-loved uniform in school (£1 donation per item towards
school funds). Please bear this in mind if you need to replace any items for your child. There is a rail
of items just inside the reception. Please ask at the office for a range of sizes.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Meet the Teacher sessions on Wednesday 25th September at 2:45.
Have a good weekend.

I cannot believe it's in the end of the week - it's flown by!
Talland have been working their socks off this week! We even managed to squeeze a couple of cheeky swims in - might as well make the most of the sun shine!
Maths:
Both year groups are nearing the end of the first unit (place value). Addition and subtraction is next on the list!
English:
Talland have worked their way through the features of an instructional text - next week it will be time to begin planning to write their own (independently). Let's see how much they've learnt - it should be fun!
Art:
We had lots of fun using black and white paint to show the children how to add shade to a colour using black or tint a colour using white. Why not ask your child what shading and tinting means?
Geography:
We've continued looking at erosion and what causes this to happen - fun added homework task to those who choose a little adventure - take pictures of you and child on/next to (nothing dangerous) different coastal features: Arch, bay, beach, cave, cliffs, coast, cove, headland, island, stack, stump, sand dune, spit. I wonder who can find the most?
CONGRATULATIONS:
Well done to Isabelle for earning a 99 club badge!
Well done to Skye for being noticed as Tallander of the week!
I have attached the spellings your children will be learning next week. If you have time, it would be fantastic if you could help your child learn them along with their times tables.
That's all from Talland. We hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Miss. Colton.

Chaipel have been busy this week, investigating Place Value in Maths and are really getting to grips with dealing with numbers up to 10,000,000. Next week, we will be rounding, reasoning and problem solving, applying our new understanding.
We are currently planning our newspaper report on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and destruction of Pompeii and this week we have been exploring how to write 'journalist-style', practising direct and indirect reporting as well as past simple and past progressive verb sentences. We will be writing our report next week and I look forward to reading them!
For Spellings, we have been creating Top Trump cards for our curriculum spellings, navigating dictionaries and unpicking a word, its composition and its word family. Phoebe and Verity have created some impressive cards full of facts.
We have been exploring the use of water colour in Art, and experimenting with various techniques to create texture. Freddie worked extremely hard and has produced some incredible work to be proud of.
Today, we were lucky to have had the opportunity to create class cards to put into a time capsule which will be buried beneath the new Big Green for future inhabitants of Polperro to unearth in years to come...
Congratulations to our People of the Week - Aria and Imogen - to displaying our school values as well as to Dom for achieving his 99 Club.
Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday.

Wow!
What a great start to the year.
The children have settled in brilliantly and are becoming more confident in their new classroom and playground.
We started off their learning with Science exploring our key question ‘what are the characteristics of an animal?’ The children discovered which groups different animals belonged to, looked at their diet to decide if they were a carnivore, omnivore or herbivore and what makes an animal suitable to be pet.
In English the children learnt the story of ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ by acting it out with actions. This lead on them writing the story in their books before making up their own animal hunt adventure!
In Maths the children began with place value by counting and representing objects, recognizing numbers as words, counting on from a number and finding 1 more/1 less within 10.
You will find a log in for ‘Numbots’ in your childs reading record. This is an app which can be accessed from home.
Please don’t forget we visit the school library on a Thursday if you would like a new book to read please return it each week.
We update our class blog regularly so keep coming back to find out what else we have been up to.
Many thanks
Year One team.

Wow! What another wonderful week of learning we have had!
This week the children have learnt the sounds i/n/m/and d/
in phonics and have worked hard to continue holding their pencils correctly and
write these letters daily.
We completed dough disco daily too as this helps strengthen
the children’s hands so they can grip their pencils correctly.
This week the children worked in teams with Mrs Gregory and
Mrs Lyden and sequenced the story of Were Going on a Bear Hunt! The children
then started their first bit of formal English activity and sat with an adult
to sequence the story themselves, they then thought of words to match the story
and tried to write the initial sounds of that word! WOW!
In maths this week the children have been exploring the
topic of Match, Sort and Compare! They have worked amazingly well at matching
objects, sorting them and comparing them with lots of different resources. We
even went out to the big playground and sorted items in big circles!
The foundation children have also used their cutting skills
to cut parts of a bear out to make the Bear from our book, they have been
making their homes from Lego, using natural resources to make faces, read
books, made tracks for the bikes and so much more!
It's been a wonderful week of exploring and learning!
Have a lovely weekend

Another week has flown by in Tregantle Class - and what a fun week we've had! Our EYFS children have been making the most of the nice weather and exploring our amazing garden area. We went on a 'bug hunt' and found all sorts of interesting creatures and insects. The children have used the magnifying glasses and bug identification sheets to find out what the bugs they found are called. We have got really into our story of the week 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' The children have been busy acting out the story and making their own beanstalks. We are super proud of how hard the EYFS children are working in their phonics lessons. We are using our 'SHAPE' learning skills every day to learn and remember each new sound. Our rhyme of the week has been 'This Little Piggy.' Tregantle Class are now experts at reciting the rhyme and have even made up some of their own actions to go with the rhyme.
In year 1 the children have been working on numbers to 10. Their focus has been finding 1 more and 1 less and using sentence stems to show their learning. In English they have written their class story 'Paddington Bear' using capital letters and full stops - amazing! The children really enjoyed their RE lesson this week where they listened to the story of Moses. You can see the children re-enacting the story in the photographs. The Year 1's have been lucky to have two sessions with 'Cricket Chris' this week and develop their throwing and catching skills.
Once again we are so pleased that the Tregantle children have tried so hard to use their 'Issy Manners' all week. We have been filled with pride listening to them talk confidently using please and thank you to the adults and children around school. There has also been a whole school focus on saying kind words, of which we've heard so much of in Tregantle Class. What incredible children we have!

Issy's Nursery children have enjoyed this last week of sunshine and being able to pop in and out of the indoor learning environment to explore the outside.
Some of our new children have really enjoyed the outdoor space and it has made settling in so much easier.
Whether the children have been digging, sliding, climbing, investigating, spinning, rolling, pretending or chatting to their friends, everyone has enjoyed feeling the warm sun on their faces.

This week Lantic class have been writing our class story about Paddington in London. The have shown great resilience as it has not always been easy!
Year 2's have been working with Lyndsey Wilde from the NHS Mental Health Support Team. They worked on resilience and discussed how teamwrk helped them solve problems.
The children have had two amazing sessions with 'Cricket Chris', in the first session they improved their catching skills and on Friday they learnt how to bowl. They will be revisiting these skills next week in their PE lesson on Monday.
During Science, we walked around the school looking for different materials - we even drew up tally charts to log our results!
